Taoist Poetry and Literature
by Zee Sing

The Tao is the natural flow of the universe. Consequently, it is futile to oppose it. Rather one should be like a flexible plant that bends when the wind blows hard, rather than a ridged tree that blows over in the wind. Simply put, the Taoist Philosophy espouses a "go with the flow" view of life.

Literature was important in ancient China. In terms of poetry, one of the most famous figures is Li Po. He was, by all accounts, an unusual character who enjoyed having a drink or two. His poems are very nature oriented. He views animals, the sky and clouds as his friends. Consequently, in his view, we are never alone. We can always celebrate with the birds and bees, flowers and trees - the ever changing course of nature.

The spirit of Taoism is reflected in the Poems of The Professor - Master of Nothingness..

In one of The Professor's poems, the oneness of the sky symbolizes the oneness of the universe. Taoism is monistic in its metaphysic - the universe is one. This is also reflected in the eternal nature of our awareness. Finally, we can see the core of the Taoist approach to life; it is non-action.

Poetry is by its nature, indirect. This makes it an ideal medium for approaching the Tao. Following in the footsteps of the Classic Taoist Poets, The Professor captures the essence and feel of the Tao itself.
